Looking out of the window at the snow falling I am reminded that winter is not yet over. With temperatures below freezing this week my woodburner has been working flat out and keeping our home warm and cosy. Knowing that I don't have to sit up close to enjoy the heat and watching the flames glowing in the wood stove, makes the evenings more enjoyable. Do Woodburners Produce more Heat than an Open Fire?

Well let me start off by saying that this is not a technical blog (although a pound of fuel burnt in a stove will produce three times more heat than fuel burnt on an open fire). However, this is more of a personal observation on an evening spent in front of an open fire (and if for a moment I sound smug, sorry!).

Each Monday I attend a course to try to further my understanding of life. Anyway, as it was a chilly night our tutor had his fire burning when we arrived. It was a welcoming sight, but what struck me was that you did not feel the heat immediately on entering the room. I was also seated at the far end of the room and felt very little benefit from the fire whatsoever! This might have been exacerbated by the fact that someone decided to sit on the floor directly in front of it, but I was amazed at the fire's inefficiency!

In stark contrast on Wednesday we had a bunch of friends round and our Woodwarm woodburner was roaring away, looking beautiful and producing copious amounts of heat. Everyone in the room was toasty and even though I was not sitting anywhere near the wood stove I was feeling the benefits from the fire.

I do appreciate that woodburners cost more than an open fire, but there are some extremely good value stoves on the market. For example the Aarrow Sherbourne Compact, the Aga Little Wenlock, the Bohemia Compact, the Boru 4.9, the Charnwood Courntry 4 and the Cast Tec Firemaster are all superbly priced and will heat your home brilliantly.

So if you were to ask me if woodburners were worth investing in I would reply with a loud yes! With fuel prices rocketing a wood or multifuel stove really is the way forward.

We now have the new Hunter Eco woodburners in stock. These woodstoves range from 4.9kwt out-put to 7kwt out-put and are between 72,5 and 82% efficient. The new Eco stoves are DEFRA approved, have a beautiful clean design and with the air wash, the glass stays fantastically clean.
We also have the new Hunter Di Lusso on display and this woodburning stove is one of the nicest insert burners on the market. The sculped handle hides the controls and the design is impeccable. The woodstove has cleanburn technology, is 79% efficient and being designed in Cornwall and built in Devon could not be more British.

Hotties logs are doing well and at only 5% moisture these burn hotter than wood and reduce atr build up. Come in and see them used on our display stoves and I would be surprised if you didn't want to take a few bags home wiyth you to try. We use Hotties logs all the time and the heat generated is fantastic.

There is always a large stock of flue here at bradley Stoves Sussex Ltd and we carry twin wall insulated as well as the single skin flue. We have Vitreous and stainless steel in 125mm, 150mm and 180mm id. cold weather 4 stoves burning

Because the weather has turned so cold we have today lit 4 woodbuners. The Morso 7648 is really controlable and the hotties logs are smouldering very well on this excellent woodstove. We also have the Stuv 16/58 alight with it's exceptional fire view and clean glass. The Stuv is a treasure to light and keep going and everyone loves the beautiful design on this amazing woodburner. The third stove is the Charnwood C-Four which is a little gem currently kicking out 3kwt and still looks new. The Charnwood range always delivers great stoves and this new model is highhly sought after and a beautifule woodburning stove with a muulti-fuel option. The last woodburner we have alight is the Stovax Studio 2 with glass frame. This woodstove is an exceptional design, very wide with excellent cleanburn and great controls. This stove looks and acts great.

We have included the Bohemia 30 woodstove or the Charnwood country 4 woodburner and included a class one 316 grade flexible liner in 150mm id, a 125mm to 150mm adaptor to flex, 500mm of 125mm connecting flue, a pot hanger (cowl and suppport), a closure plate, stove paint and firecement. A competent installer such as a Hetas registered fitter should install this and advise on size before ordering.

I don't know about you, but this weekend I have planned an expedition to the dark recesses of my loft! It's an annual event that takes place on Advent Sunday in our house, where I go in search of our Christmas decorations and accessories. As the wood burning stove comes into its own now that the nights are becoming colder, finding a place to keep the matches or gas lighter can be challenging.
This year I have decided to ditch my luminous orange gas lighter in favour of long matches kept in this silver polished match holder. Not only does it match my Woodwarm woodburner, but you have to admit it's beautiful, and excellent value at only £23.10.
With the recession biting I can see that most of my winter will be spent at home. The days of popping down the pub, or relaxing in a restaurant have long gone, but I still value enjoying company in my own home and the wood stove certainly adds the right ambience for a social setting. Therefore keeping the hearth looking lovely is part of making my lounge welcoming and so my match holder fits in so well!

With the first frost adorning my lawn (and I must apologise to those of you who have been battling the wintery elements over the past week!) I am feeling suitably happy this morning! It is not just the beauty of the garden, nor the autumnal hues of my cherry and beech trees, it is the sense of peace that I feel in having made the decision to invest in a woodburner some years ago.

I know that I must be sounding smug, and there are quite a few accusations on the internet that wood stove owners do have this characteristic, but I can't help it. Last night we had 12 friends over and sat round the woodburner in the lounge. The logs were burning, the fire roaring, and just occasionally you could catch the softest noise of water bubbling in the pipes as heat from the fire was transferred to the water pipes. However, what was more warming was the comments from our friends extoling the virtues of a woodburner! Some of these friends have open fires, and they do look beautiful, but as they mentioned the whole lounge was cosy and warm and you could still see the patterns of the flames in the fire. Other friends have central heating and gas fires, but still loved the way that the wood stove looked so in place in such a contemporary setting. Our friends who live in a caravan didn't even want to talk about how cold it is at the moment, but when their house is finished they are certainly going to buy a wood stove!

So if you are thinking of being cosy and warm this winter which wood stove would I recommend? Well I have truly fallen in love with the Charnwood C-Four. It not only looks stunning, is a great price, but has the option of a boiler available with it.

Should I buy a Woodburner to Fit my Fireplace?

That's a logical question, after all you might think that if you get the biggest wood stove that'll fit your fire place that you'll save yourself some money in the long run. However, this is not necessarily the case, and in most cases you would be unwise to pick your woodburner or multifuel stove using this criteria.

"Woodburners are most efficient if they run hot," said Steve O'Reilly, Director of Bradley Stoves, Sussex.

"Putting in a large wood stove will therefore require more fuel, and for most households they won't be able to keep the fire at a temperature that is efficient,"

A Woodburner is Still a Good Investment

It's interesting to see what is written about woodburners on the net. Today I read an interesting article in one of the UK's leading newspapers that was not extoling the virtues of woodburners, on the contrary the journalist was quite grumpy about his wood stove, and could not see why someone like myself would be so excited to own one.

You might think that the only reason that I write about the value of wood stoves and woodburners is because it adds value to this website. Partly that is true, but I am the type of person who finds it difficult to lie. It was only when I had my house totally rebuilt some years ago that I even considered putting in a wood stove, not because I thought that they were unattractive, but having a 1960's property I was having difficulty picturing how the wood stove would fit aesthetically once I'd had the extension.

So have I been disappointed with my wood stove? Er no!! Not for one moment!! Do I rush home to keep it alight - certainly not, it's there as my friend, my companion and I certainly don't treat it as a new-born with ever demanding needs. The wood stove is there to serve me, not vice versa! And I think that even Steve, owner of woodburners.co.uk wouldn't try to tell you that a wood stove is all that you need to heat your house. It's possible to buy a wood or multi-fuel stove that will heat 10 radiators, Hunter does a very attractive boiler stove, but mostly wood stoves are bought to supplement the existing heating, and certainly will cut your heating bills.

At my house we have an amazing heat bank, and into this contraption that looks more like something out of Dr Who, feeds the hot water. Well actually the hot water is passed by it and a heat exchanger takes the heat from the water and puts into into the heat bank. It's just like a heat piggy-bank. So the solar panels feed into this, as does the wood stove, which is going from around 3pm until midnight. The heat is then used to heat the tank of water which is then used for showers and the underfloor heating - water underfloor heating is fantastic. But we still have a boiler, and with 9 of us in the house (yes that's not a typo, there really are 9 of us) we need one! Can you imagine how many showers are taken in our house?! Yet we have seen our gas bill slashed by two-thirds and that is primarily due to our wood stove.

So has it been expensive buying wood? Well fortunately we live in the country so obtaining wood has not been a problem. With in-laws who owned a woodland we were able to stock our wood store full of beautiful oak and cherry logs, but a friend of ours cut down there tree a couple of weeks ago and arrived with logs for us to add to the store. It'll be a while until we need to forage again to find some more logs to burn. I will admit that my husband is a dab hand with a chain saw and that has helped to get the logs into suitable sizes for burning, but I really like stocking the wood pile as it engenders that sense of cosiness that is at the heart of a woodburner.

Why did I buy a woodburner in the first place? You will know that I have had an open fire and although it looks lovely all the heat goes up the chimney (that's why it is hats off to Boru Stove s for bringing the firedoor to market). When I created a modern house out of my 1960's monstrosity I really needed a focal point in the lounge that embodied welcome, warmth and peace. Building a simple fireplace and hearth was fantastic, but putting in a wood stove that would take care of my underfloor heating was pure genius! So the woodburner was bought primarily for aesthetics. I needed something that would draw the eye to the centre of the room and take the visitor's mind of the rsj that was in the ceiling, and it certainly has worked.

Finally then a woodburner is worth every penny. Yes they need clearing out, and the chimney's to be swept tomorrow, but winter wouldn't be winter without one! We do have an outstanding range of wood stoves and multifuel stoves at woodburners.co.uk.

If I was going to recommend a stove I certainly like the Charnwood C-Four Wood Stove and I have been really impressed with the Hunter Herald series because Hunter have worked hard to become more contemporary with their designs whilst still maintaining an outstanding product. So please don't let the bad press get you down and take the plunge and start looking forward to autumn and winter again because you have a fire that will keep you company through the long dark nights.

Steve Jobs was iconic, and the world is a lesser place now that he is no longer with us. I will be opening my finest malt tonight in front of my woodburner and raising a glass to him.

It's funny how Apple products have crept into our lives and become the norm. I don't know about you, but I take my iPod for granted and my iPhone is like a friend to me! And so I am quite glad that the weather has turned because there is something incredibly comforting about sitting by a wood stove and watching the flames make patterns behind the glass. A woodburner enables one to sit and think, to contemplate the preciousness of life and to step out of the pressures placed upon us and to consider where our priorities lie.

I am a realist, and know that in a few weeks time Steve Jobs' tragic death will no longer be uppermost in my thoughts. However, I am hoping that I will not lose sight of the need to value my relationships. I am going to pencil in more time for evenings with friends and family, drinking in the ambience of the woodburner and hopefully a bottle of wine! I am going to stop wasting time in front of the TV and call more people in an endeavour not to lose touch, and I am no longer going to wait until Christmas to send letters to people!

Steve Jobs made his famous Stanford speech in 2005 and I take this quote from it:

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. Do you need chimney swept if you've a wood stove?

The answer is most certainly "yes" and really the best time to have it done is at the end of the burning season. However, a stove can run poorly and be inefficient if you do have your chimney swept as tar and soot can deposit in the chimney restricting the area in the chimney which in turn reduces the draw through the chimney. So to make your wood or multifuel stove continue to serve you well then it is essential to have your chimney swept and to use seasoned wood. Chimney sweeps can be busy at this time of year, but it is better to have your chimney swept than to leave it until next year.

I know that it is still August, but you have to admit it's been a bit chilly today! And I know that it might seem as if I am looking for an excuse to light my woodburning stove, but that's because I am! Woodburners are comforting! A Wood Stove versus an Open Fire - which is better?

When I first bought my former house, a wonderful Edwardian property, I wouldn't even consider putting in a wood stove, thinking that somehow I would lose out on the aesthetics of an open fire. Older and wiser I realise what a fool-hardy decision I made as 90% of the heat was lost up the chimney and my open fire caused draughts (apparently an open fire can draw up to 17 m³ of air a minute) so my room never felt that warm as you moved away from the fire.

Although the allure of an open fire can biased your decision when thinking about what type of heating to put in a room please remember that technology has moved on considerably. The woodburners of today present a stunning view of the flames and are extremely efficient in heating a room.
