I don't know about you, but when I hear the word "AGA" I think of my Aunt's country kitchen with the kettle sizzling and bread baking. Of course that was some 30 years ago, but AGA are still manufacturing beautiful cookers as well as stunning wood and multi-fuel stoves.

It is times like these that I wished I worked for a clothing store. That's because when I see something that I really like I could buy it and add it to my collection. Sadly that is not so easy with a wood stove and yet the AGA Ludlow Stove is quite frankly gorgeous, and such a bargain at just over £735. Unfortunately my Woodwarm Fireview has pride of place, but the AGA Ludlow stove is calling to me, it's just there's nowhere to put it!

I know that we are in the middle of a hose pipe ban, but to be honest the weather is pretty wet and cold at the moment. So much so that I have been huddled round my wood stove and my underfloor heating has been warming the rooms nicely. One advantage of a woodburner with a boiler is that it will heat water and underfloor heating if you have the right model. Our Woodwarm Fireview has not only proved itself when it comes to aesthetics, but certainly has cut our heating bills significantly, and is proving extremely welcoming in this weather.

Having a woodburner installed might seem like a big investment, but it will not only reduce heating bills, but will add value to your home. Our 1960's property was significantly improved with the building of a false chimney breast, the addition of a granite hearth, and the addition of a woodburner. A featureless room became a place of beauty after only a couple of days and it was so exciting when we saw how efficient our wood stove was at warming our hot water! It had taken some convincing for me to have a woodburner because all I remembered were the wood stoves of my childhood, or the soot-stained stoves in the pub. I thought that an open fire would be better, but I realise now just how wrong I was because the woodburner rewards you with a stunning flame pattern, whilst warming the room nicely and not losing most of the heat up the chimney! There is less dust too, and no one who sees the lounge with the fire roaring fails to be impressed.

So if you are feeling down about the weather, and let's face it the gloom is pretty dismal, install a woodburner and enjoy the pleasure that it brings!

A Woodburner as opposed to a Multifuel Stove - which should I choose?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a woodburner versus a multifuel stove?

A woodburner and a multifuel stove look the same from the outside, but generally a wood burning stove has no grate. As wood burns best on a bed of ash, taking it's air from above and heat from below, having a grate can optimise the performance especially for overnight burn. So you will still have remnants of a warm fire in the morning, which you can quickly get going again if you wish. Wood can also be sourced from a number of locations, and as long as it has been seasoned will burn beautifully.

A multi-fulel stove gives the option to burn either smokeless fuel or wood. Smokeless fuel burns best with no ash under it and air from below. Because of this there is a grate and ash pan to remove the embers. It is best to remove coal embers from below the grate to allow for air and to stop any fusion (weakening of the grate through hot embers burning through both sides). If burning wood some grates take a long time to build up ash so take advice before you buy (we are more than happy to help you at Bradley Stoves, Sussex with this). There are three main types of multi-fuel grates. These are fixed grates (usually straight bars with holes in), riddle grates with slats (these grates rotate to move the embers and grates that close completely for building up ash when wood burning), or open grates, but these do need a little work with a poker from time to time to keep them burning efficiently.

With a multi-fuel stove you will generate twenty more times ash than with a woodburner. That means that you'll need to be happy to empty it more regularly - at least once a day. However, the fuel generally burns hotter, so that might be an advantage if you want to have a stove running as efficiently as possible.

There are some areas that are designated as smoke free zones, but today's woodburners are 80% efficient and so burning wood instead of smokeless fuel shouldn't be a problem. So it really is down to you which stove would suit you best. For me there is something very attractive about a wood pile in a garden, but finding somewhere to store bags of smokeless fuel doesn't quite have the same appeal, unless you have a cellar.

Why Inset Wood Stoves are Proving So Popular

With the recession biting even harder than most of us expected the days of scanning the property pages for the house of our dreams has gone for the time being. Instead you are probably more like me and wondering how I can give my home a new look, whilst saving money. It is true that woodburners have become more popular in recent months, and wood stove manufacturers are responding accordingly, designing woodburners that not only look good, but are extremely efficient.

An inset wood stove really does add glamour to the home, and doesn't have to break the bank as they start from as little as little as £850. I am currently considering the The Morsø S80 insert wood stove because it not only looks gorgeous, but has a heat output of 7kW, which will easily keep my dining room warm. It's not the cheapest woodburner availalbe at around the £1750 mark, but it certainly will add value to my home, keep my dinner guests happy (particularly as we are still feeling chilly during these cool April evenings), and provide a superb focal point. It is difficult working in a woodburner showroom because there is just so much choice, but Morsø do make excellent stoves and the S80 is particularly beautiful

Woodburners.co.uk have been busy looking at ways to make buying a wood stove, or a multifuel stove for that matter easier. We thought that if we provided categories that reflected what our customers were searching for that we could make our visitors' lives easier.

So first and foremostly we have introduced a place where you can find our multifuel stoves. Now at woodburners.co.uk we would recommend that you don't worry too much about buying a multifuel stove because a woodburner is a better choice. Steve, our wonderful director, will be happy to talk you through the reasons for this, but we do have woodburners on sale that can be adapted to use multifuels or we have specific multifuel stoves online for you to select.

The next category that we thought that you'd be interested in is Inset Stoves. These wood stoves are proving increasingly popular because they are contemporary and yet highly efficient. Looking out of the window at the snow falling I am reminded that winter is not yet over. With temperatures below freezing this week my woodburner has been working flat out and keeping our home warm and cosy. Knowing that I don't have to sit up close to enjoy the heat and watching the flames glowing in the wood stove, makes the evenings more enjoyable. Do Woodburners Produce more Heat than an Open Fire?

Well let me start off by saying that this is not a technical blog (although a pound of fuel burnt in a stove will produce three times more heat than fuel burnt on an open fire). However, this is more of a personal observation on an evening spent in front of an open fire (and if for a moment I sound smug, sorry!).

Each Monday I attend a course to try to further my understanding of life. Anyway, as it was a chilly night our tutor had his fire burning when we arrived. It was a welcoming sight, but what struck me was that you did not feel the heat immediately on entering the room. I was also seated at the far end of the room and felt very little benefit from the fire whatsoever! This might have been exacerbated by the fact that someone decided to sit on the floor directly in front of it, but I was amazed at the fire's inefficiency!

In stark contrast on Wednesday we had a bunch of friends round and our Woodwarm woodburner was roaring away, looking beautiful and producing copious amounts of heat. Everyone in the room was toasty and even though I was not sitting anywhere near the wood stove I was feeling the benefits from the fire.

I do appreciate that woodburners cost more than an open fire, but there are some extremely good value stoves on the market. For example the Aarrow Sherbourne Compact, the Aga Little Wenlock, the Bohemia Compact, the Boru 4.9, the Charnwood Courntry 4 and the Cast Tec Firemaster are all superbly priced and will heat your home brilliantly.

So if you were to ask me if woodburners were worth investing in I would reply with a loud yes! With fuel prices rocketing a wood or multifuel stove really is the way forward.

We now have the new Hunter Eco woodburners in stock. These woodstoves range from 4.9kwt out-put to 7kwt out-put and are between 72,5 and 82% efficient. The new Eco stoves are DEFRA approved, have a beautiful clean design and with the air wash, the glass stays fantastically clean.
We also have the new Hunter Di Lusso on display and this woodburning stove is one of the nicest insert burners on the market. The sculped handle hides the controls and the design is impeccable. The woodstove has cleanburn technology, is 79% efficient and being designed in Cornwall and built in Devon could not be more British.

Hotties logs are doing well and at only 5% moisture these burn hotter than wood and reduce atr build up. Come in and see them used on our display stoves and I would be surprised if you didn't want to take a few bags home wiyth you to try. We use Hotties logs all the time and the heat generated is fantastic.

There is always a large stock of flue here at bradley Stoves Sussex Ltd and we carry twin wall insulated as well as the single skin flue. We have Vitreous and stainless steel in 125mm, 150mm and 180mm id. cold weather 4 stoves burning

Because the weather has turned so cold we have today lit 4 woodbuners. The Morso 7648 is really controlable and the hotties logs are smouldering very well on this excellent woodstove. We also have the Stuv 16/58 alight with it's exceptional fire view and clean glass. The Stuv is a treasure to light and keep going and everyone loves the beautiful design on this amazing woodburner. The third stove is the Charnwood C-Four which is a little gem currently kicking out 3kwt and still looks new. The Charnwood range always delivers great stoves and this new model is highhly sought after and a beautifule woodburning stove with a muulti-fuel option. The last woodburner we have alight is the Stovax Studio 2 with glass frame. This woodstove is an exceptional design, very wide with excellent cleanburn and great controls. This stove looks and acts great.

I don't know about you, but this weekend I have planned an expedition to the dark recesses of my loft! It's an annual event that takes place on Advent Sunday in our house, where I go in search of our Christmas decorations and accessories. As the wood burning stove comes into its own now that the nights are becoming colder, finding a place to keep the matches or gas lighter can be challenging.
This year I have decided to ditch my luminous orange gas lighter in favour of long matches kept in this silver polished match holder. Not only does it match my Woodwarm woodburner, but you have to admit it's beautiful, and excellent value at only £23.10.
