<title>Do Woodburners Produce more Heat than an Open Fire?</title>

<description>&lt;p&gt;Well let me start off by saying that this is not a technical blog (although a pound of fuel burnt in a stove will produce three times more heat than fuel burnt on an open fire). However, this is more of a personal observation on an evening spent in front of an open fire (and if for a moment I sound smug, sorry!).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Each Monday I attend a course to try to further my understanding of life. Anyway, as it was a chilly night our tutor had his fire burning when we arrived. It was a welcoming sight, but what struck me was that you did not feel the heat immediately on entering the room. I was also seated at the far end of the room and felt very little benefit from the fire whatsoever! This might have been exacerbated by the fact that someone decided to sit on the floor directly in front of it, but I was amazed at the fire's inefficiency!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In stark contrast on Wednesday we had a bunch of friends round and our Woodwarm woodburner was roaring away, looking beautiful and producing copious amounts of heat. Everyone in the room was toasty and even though I was not sitting anywhere near the wood stove I was feeling the benefits from the fire.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I do appreciate that woodburners cost more than an open fire, but there are some extremely good value stoves on the market. The sculped handle hides the controls and the design is impeccable. <title>A Wood Stove to make you Cosy and Warm!</title>

<description>&lt;p&gt;With the first frost adorning my lawn (and I must apologise to those of you who have been battling the wintery elements over the past week!) I am feeling suitably happy this morning! It is not just the beauty of the garden, nor the autumnal hues of my cherry and beech trees, it is the sense of peace that I feel in having made the decision to invest in a woodburner some years ago.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I know that I must be sounding smug, and there are quite a few accusations on the internet that wood stove owners do have this characteristic, but I can't help it. Last night we had 12 friends over and sat round the woodburner in the lounge. The logs were burning, the fire roaring, and just occasionally you could catch the softest noise of water bubbling in the pipes as heat from the fire was transferred to the water pipes. However, what was more warming was the comments from our friends extoling the virtues of a woodburner! Some of these friends have open fires, and they do look beautiful, but as they mentioned the whole lounge was cosy and warm and you could still see the patterns of the flames in the fire. Other friends have central heating and gas fires, but still loved the way that the wood stove looked so in place in such a contemporary setting. Our friends who live in a caravan didn't even want to talk about how cold it is at the moment, but when their house is finished they are certainly going to buy a wood stove!&lt;/p&gt;

<title>A Woodburner is Still a Good Investment</title>

<description>&lt;p&gt;It's interesting to see what is written about woodburners on the net. Today I read an interesting article in one of the UK's leading newspapers that was not extoling the virtues of woodburners, on the contrary the journalist was quite grumpy about his wood stove, and could not see why someone like myself would be so excited to own one.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You might think that the only reason that I write about the value of wood stoves and woodburners is because it adds value to this website. Partly that is true, but I am the type of person who finds it difficult to lie. It was only when I had my house totally rebuilt some years ago that I even considered putting in a wood stove, not because I thought that they were unattractive, but having a 1960's property I was having difficulty picturing how the wood stove would fit aesthetically once I'd had the extension.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So have I been disappointed with my wood stove? Er no!! Not for one moment!! Do I rush home to keep it alight - certainly not, it's there as my friend, my companion and I certainly don't treat it as a new-born with ever demanding needs. The wood stove is there to serve me, not vice versa! And I think that even Steve, owner of woodburners.co.uk wouldn't try to tell you that a wood stove is all that you need to heat your house. It's possible to buy a wood or multi-fuel stove that will heat 10 radiators, Hunter does a very attractive boiler stove, but mostly wood stoves are bought to supplement the existing heating, and certainly will cut your heating bills.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At my house we have an amazing heat bank, and into this contraption that looks more like something out of Dr Who, feeds the hot water. Well actually the hot water is passed by it and a heat exchanger takes the heat from the water and puts into into the heat bank. It's just like a heat piggy-bank. So the solar panels feed into this, as does the wood stove, which is going from around 3pm until midnight. The heat is then used to heat the tank of water which is then used for&amp;nbsp; showers and the underfloor heating - water underfloor heating is fantastic. But we still have a boiler, and with 9 of us in the house (yes that's not a typo, there really are 9 of us) we need one! Can you imagine how many showers are taken in our house?! Yet we have seen our gas bill slashed by two-thirds and that is primarily due to our wood stove.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So has it been expensive buying wood? Well fortunately we live in the country so obtaining wood has not been a problem. With in-laws who owned a woodland we were able to stock our wood store full of beautiful oak and cherry logs, but a friend of ours cut down there tree a couple of weeks ago and arrived with logs for us to add to the store. It'll be a while until we need to forage again to find some more logs to burn. I will admit that my husband is a dab hand with a chain saw and that has helped to get the logs into suitable sizes for burning, but I really like stocking the wood pile as it engenders that sense of cosiness that is at the heart of a woodburner.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Why did I buy a woodburner in the first place? I needed something that would draw the eye to the centre of the room and take the visitor's mind of the rsj that was in the ceiling, and it certainly has worked.&lt;/p&gt;

<title>I'll be raising a glass to Steve Jobs tonight when sitting by my Woodburner </title>

<description>&lt;p&gt;Steve Jobs was iconic, and the world is a lesser place now that he is no longer with us. I will be opening my finest malt tonight in front of my woodburner and raising a glass to him.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It's funny how Apple products have crept into our lives and become the norm. I don't know about you, but I take my iPod for granted and my iPhone is like a friend to me! And so I am quite glad that the weather has turned because there is something incredibly comforting about sitting by a wood stove and watching the flames make patterns behind the glass. A woodburner enables one to sit and think, to contemplate the preciousness of life and to step out of the pressures placed upon us and to consider where our priorities lie.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I am a realist, and know that in a few weeks time Steve Jobs' tragic death will no longer be uppermost in my thoughts. However, I am hoping that I will not lose sight of the need to value my relationships. I am going to pencil in more time for evenings with friends and family, drinking in the ambience of the woodburner and hopefully a bottle of wine! I am going to stop wasting time in front of the TV and call more people in an endeavour not to lose touch, and I am no longer going to wait until Christmas to send letters to people!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Steve Jobs made his famous Stanford speech in 2005 and I take this quote from it:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;ldquo;Remembering that I&amp;rsquo;ll be dead soon is the most important tool I&amp;rsquo;ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. Older and wiser I realise what a fool-hardy decision I made as 90% of the heat was lost up the chimney and my open fire caused draughts (apparently an open fire can draw up to 17 m&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; of air a minute) so my room never felt that warm as you moved away from the fire.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Although the allure of an open fire can biased your decision when thinking about what type of heating to put in a room please remember that technology has moved on considerably.
